Explore the Vatican at night with fewer crowds
Vatican Museums evening tours give you access to the illuminated galleries from 3pm to 5:30pm on select days — well into the quieter late-afternoon and early evening period. Self-guided evening tickets start from €49 per adult; guided evening small-group tours from €69. The Sistine Chapel and main galleries are included. The atmosphere in the final hours before closing is markedly quieter than the midday peak, and in summer the cooler temperatures make a significant difference to the experience.
The Vatican Museums close at 7pm Monday to Thursday and 8pm on Fridays and Saturdays (last entry two hours before closing). The quietest window of any standard opening day falls in the final two hours — tour groups have largely departed, the morning rush has cleared, and visitor numbers thin considerably. An evening or late-afternoon ticket deliberately targets this window.
This page covers all evening tour options — self-guided, guided small-group, and combination tickets — along with what each includes, current prices, and what to expect on arrival.

Vatican Museums evening tickets are the most affordable way to experience the galleries with significantly fewer visitors than the morning peak. By 3pm the bulk of tour groups have completed their visits and departed; visitor numbers thin noticeably from that point towards closing. In summer, the late afternoon is also considerably cooler than the 10am–2pm window when galleries can reach 30°C+. The Sistine Chapel is not silent in the evening — it still receives visitors — but the atmosphere is calmer than the midday rush.
hoose an early morning tour if experiencing the Sistine Chapel with virtually no crowds is the priority, you want St. Peter’s Basilica included, and you are happy to start your day early. Choose an evening tour if budget is a factor (evening self-guided from €49 vs early morning from €169), you prefer a flexible late-afternoon slot, or you want to combine with morning sightseeing elsewhere in Rome.

The Vatican Museums entrance is on Viale Vaticano on the north side of Vatican City. For evening ticket holders, join the yellow-signposted ‘Online Tickets’ lane at your reserved time. Have your QR code ready on your smartphone — screenshot it before leaving your accommodation as mobile signal near the entrance can be unreliable.
Self-guided evening visitors can collect an audio guide from the desk near the Gregorian Egyptian Museum just inside the main entrance. Guided evening tour groups meet their guide at the designated meeting point stated in their booking confirmation — typically Touristation at Viale Vaticano 95.

Opening Hours for Evening Visits
The Vatican Museums close at 7pm Monday to Thursday (last entry 5pm) and at 8pm on Fridays and Saturdays (last entry 6pm). Evening ticket time slots of 3pm to 4:30pm give you 2.5 to 4 hours inside depending on your slot and the day of the week. On Sundays the Museums are closed, except the last Sunday of the month.
What to Wear
Shoulders and knees must be covered regardless of the time of visit. Evening temperatures in Rome can cool significantly after 6pm in autumn and winter — bring a light layer. See our full Vatican dress code guide for details.
Yes — particularly in summer when daytime heat and crowds are at their worst. The evening window (3pm–closing) is measurably quieter and cooler than the midday peak, and the illuminated galleries create a different atmosphere. For the emptiest experience of the Sistine Chapel, however, an early morning tour is the better choice.
Self-guided evening tickets offer entry slots at 3:00pm, 3:30pm, 4:00pm, and 4:30pm. Guided evening tours have slots available until 5:30pm. The Museums close at 7pm (Mon–Thu) and 8pm (Fri–Sat).
Yes — the Sistine Chapel is included in all Vatican Museums tickets including evening options. Note that the Chapel may occasionally be closed for religious events without prior notice; no refund is issued in these cases.
St. Peter’s Basilica is not included in Vatican Museums evening tickets — it has a separate entrance and operates on its own schedule. For Basilica access included in your tour ticket, consider an early morning tour (see our early morning Vatican tour page) or a standard guided tour with the Basilica add-on.
Most self-guided and guided evening Vatican tickets are non-refundable and non-reschedulable once purchased. Check the specific cancellation policy of your chosen ticket at booking before confirming.
Yes. Vatican City and the surrounding Prati neighbourhood are safe and well-lit. The area around Viale Vaticano is busy with tourists until the Museums close. Standard urban precautions apply — keep bags close and be alert in crowds.
