Metro, Bus, Taxi & Walking Routes

The Vatican Museums are located on Viale Vaticano in Vatican City, accessible from central Rome via: Metro Line A to Ottaviano-San Pietro station (7-minute walk to the entrance) or Cipro station (9-minute walk); Bus 49 stopping directly at the entrance on Viale Vaticano; Bus 23, 271, or 982 to Lungotevere stops with a short walk across the river; taxi from central Rome (approximately €10–15, 15–25 minutes depending on traffic). The Museums are approximately 2.5km from the Pantheon and 3.5km from the Colosseum — reachable on foot in 30–45 minutes through pleasant streets.

The Vatican Museums are one of the most visited sites in Rome, and getting there efficiently depends entirely on where you’re staying. The metro is usually the fastest option from most central hotels; buses are more scenic but slower in traffic; taxis are convenient for groups. This page covers every transport option with exact timings and practical directions.

The Museums’ address is Viale Vaticano, 00165 Rome, Italy. The main entrance is on the north side of Vatican City — a long, pale-yellow wall with a steady queue of visitors outside. Get Directions

Metro Line A (orange/red line) has two stations near the Vatican Museums: Ottaviano-San Pietro (7-minute walk to the entrance) and Cipro (9-minute walk). Both are on the same line; Ottaviano is one stop closer and the better choice for most visitors. Metro Line A runs from Battistini in the west to Anagnina in the east, connecting to Roma Termini (the main train station) in approximately 15 minutes.

From Ottaviano-San Pietro Station (Recommended)

Buses 23, 271, and 982 stop at Lungotevere stops (Lungotevere in Sassia or Lungotevere Castello) a short walk across the Tiber. Tram 8 runs from Largo Argentina toward the Trastevere area, from which the Vatican is a 20-minute walk or short bus ride. From the Colosseum: approximately 50 minutes (4km), passing through the historic centre. From Piazza Navona: approximately 25 minutes (2km), crossing Ponte Vittorio Emanuele II. The walk from the Pantheon is particularly pleasant, passing through the medieval streets of the Borgo district just east of the Vatican.

The Vatican Museums Entrance — Where to Go

The Vatican Museums entrance is on Viale Vaticano on the north side of Vatican City — not on St. Peter’s Square. This is a common source of confusion: St. Peter’s Basilica is on the south side of Vatican City with a separate entrance. If you arrive at St. Peter’s Square looking for the Museums, you are at the wrong entrance — walk north (keeping the Vatican wall on your left) for approximately 10–15 minutes to reach the Museums entrance on Viale Vaticano.

  • Address: Viale Vaticano, 00165 Rome, Italy
  • Landmark: Look for the long queue and yellow ‘Online Tickets’ signboard — the dedicated lane for pre-booked visitors
  • Google Maps: Search ‘Vatican Museums entrance’ rather than ‘Vatican City’ to get the correct location
  • Not at St. Peter’s: St. Peter’s Basilica is on the opposite (south) side of Vatican City with an entirely separate entrance on St. Peter’s Square

Practical Tips for Getting There

  • Book your ticket before you travel — all Vatican Museums entry is online-only since January 2024. You cannot buy tickets at the door
  • Plan 30 extra minutes — security screening at the Museums entrance takes 10–30 minutes on busy days; factor this into your travel time
  • Avoid arriving by car — Viale Vaticano is a pedestrian-priority street; parking near the Vatican is limited and expensive. See our
  • Avoid Wednesday mornings — the Papal Audience in St. Peter’s Square creates significant additional foot traffic in the area from 8am to 12:30pm
  • Download maps offline — mobile signal and data can be slow in the Vatican area; download your route in Google Maps or Maps.me before leaving your accommodation
