Castel Gandolfo Tickets
Gardens, Kayak & Minibus Tours

Castel Gandolfo is the Pope’s official summer residence, located 25km southeast of Rome in the Alban Hills above Lake Albano. The Pontifical Villas and Papal Gardens are open to visitors via two main tour types: a self-guided minibus tour with audio guide through the 55-hectare gardens (from €22, with optional Astronomical Domes add-on for €36 or porchetta lunch for €37); and a guided kayak tour on Lake Albano (from €36 adult, €32 for children aged 8–13). The town itself is free to explore independently.
Most visitors to the Vatican never make it to Castel Gandolfo — which is precisely what makes it worth the trip. The Pontifical Villas cover 55 hectares of gardens, terraces, and farmland above Lake Albano, with views that rival anything in the Rome area. The Papal Palace itself, designed by Carlo Maderno in the 17th century, overlooks the main piazza of the hilltop town. Since Pope Francis opened the Villas to the public in 2016, it has become one of Lazio’s most distinctive day trips from Rome.
This page covers both main visitor experiences — the Pontifical Gardens minibus tour and the Lake Albano kayak tour — plus how to get there, opening hours, and what to see in the town itself.

What to See at Castel Gandolfo
The key sites at Castel Gandolfo are: the Pontifical Villas and Papal Gardens (55 hectares, accessible by minibus tour); the Papal Palace (17th century, designed by Carlo Maderno — the facade overlooks Piazza della Libertà); the Astronomical Domes of the Vatican Observatory; the town centre and Piazza della Libertà with lake views; Lake Albano below (best accessed by kayak); and the Villa of Domitian’s ruins along the lake shore, visible from the water.
The Pontifical Villas and Gardens
The 55-hectare Pontifical Villas were assembled by various popes from the early 17th century and include ornate formal gardens, woodland terraces, farmland producing dairy, wine, and olive oil for the Vatican, and panoramic viewpoints over Lake Albano that rank among the finest views in Lazio. Pope Francis opened the Villas to the public in 2016 — prior to that, they were entirely private papal property.
The Astronomical Domes
The Vatican Observatory — one of the oldest astronomical research institutions in the world — was founded by Pope Gregory XIII in 1582 to help reform the Julian calendar. Its historic telescopes are housed in domed towers on the roof of the Papal Palace at Castel Gandolfo. The Domes add-on gives visitors access to the observatory building and its historical instruments — a genuinely unusual combination of papal history and scientific heritage.
Lake Albano
Lake Albano is a volcanic crater lake 293 metres deep — one of the clearest freshwater lakes in central Italy. The shoreline below Castel Gandolfo is relatively undeveloped; the Roman port of Emperor Domitian’s lakeside villa is visible from the water on the kayak tour. Swimming conditions (calm water, typically clear) are generally excellent in summer.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Castel Gandolfo worth visiting from Rome?
Yes — Castel Gandolfo offers a genuinely different experience from central Rome: open gardens, lake views, fresh air, and papal history without the Vatican’s crowds. The minibus tour through the Pontifical Villas is one of the most unusual experiences in the region. A half-day trip from Rome is easily achievable by train.
Can I visit Castel Gandolfo without a tour?
Yes — the town centre, Piazza della Libertà, and the viewpoints over Lake Albano are freely accessible. The Papal Palace facade and the piazza the Pope historically addressed from are visible without any ticket. A ticket is required only for the Pontifical Villas, Papal Gardens, and Astronomical Domes.
How long does the Castel Gandolfo minibus tour take?
The minibus circuit through the Pontifical Villas and Papal Gardens takes up to 2 hours. Adding the Astronomical Domes extends the visit by approximately 45–60 minutes.
Do I need to book Castel Gandolfo tickets in advance?
It is recommended, especially for weekends and during summer. The minibus tour has limited capacity and popular time slots can sell out, particularly on Saturdays. Book at least a few days ahead during peak season (April–October).
Can children go on the Lake Albano kayak tour?
Children aged 8–13 can join the kayak tour at the reduced child rate (€32). Children under 8 are not permitted. No prior kayaking experience is required — the guide provides instruction at the start.
Is Castel Gandolfo the same as the Vatican Museums?
No — Castel Gandolfo is a separate site entirely, 25km from Rome. It is the Pope’s official summer residence, owned and operated by the Holy See, but it is not part of the Vatican Museums complex in Rome. A Vatican Museums ticket does not give access to Castel Gandolfo. For the Vatican Museums themselves, see our Vatican Museums tickets complete guide.
